What's New this Month? Pull Weeds, Not Muscles. How to avoid gardening injury. Spring has sprung the grass and weeds are all around us. Many of us are thinking of trading in our treadmills at this time of year for the exercise of the garden. Bending, reaching, pulling, and digging in your garden can provide a great workout, but can cause muscle strain and injury if precautions are not taken. Warming up and cooling down periods are just as important for gardening or other yard work as it is for any other athletic activity. Before stretching for any activity, there are a few tips to keep in mind. Breathe in and out slowly throughout stretching exercises; stretch gently and smoothly, like a willow tree blowing in the wind, do not bounce or jerk your body in any way; always stretch as far as you can comfortably. You should never feel pain. Start your stretching with the legs, both front and back, then the back, shoulders and don’t forget the arms and especially your fingers. Here are just a few simple tips: Take your time the weeds will still be there tomorrow, don’t jump in to the garden and work for 2-3 hrs straight. Break up your time in the garden; you really can take a water/stretch stop every 20 – 30 minutes. Post event stiffness or soreness is common one to two days after. A nice hot, 20 minute bath with 2 handfuls of Epsom salts can help to ease that ache. Stretching out ½ an hour before you go to bed, and don’t forget to drink lots of water. Remember, if you get thirsty you are already ½ an hour or more into dehydration. Throughout the day your body needs on average 1 - 8oz glass of water for every 25 lbs of you. Prepare and prevent, there are many things you can do to minimize aches and pains after your bout with the flower garden, Glover Road Massage and Chiropractic, have the years of training to give you prevention and stretching tips before you head out for your date with the weeds.
